The government have issued guidance to help employers repay HMRC if they have over claimed through the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme.
We have put together some key points to assist employers with repayments in line with the guidance supplied by HMRC.
- If you have uploaded a claim in error and want to delete it, you must delete the claim via the online service within 72 hours.
- If you have made an error in a claim that has resulted in an over claimed amount you must pay this back to HMRC.
- When you make another claim you can then inform HMRC of the over claim and whether you need to reduce the amount you are claiming to take into account the previous over claim. Your new claim amount will be reduced to reflect the over claimed amount and you should keep a record of this adjustment for 6 years.
- If you have made an error in a claim and do not plan to submit further claims, you should contact HMRC to let them know about your error and find out how to pay back any over claimed amounts. You will be given a payment reference number and directed to make a payment following your call.
- If you have made an error that has resulted in an under claimed amount, you should contact HMRC to amend your claim. As you are increasing the amount of your claim, they will need to conduct additional checks.
HMRC are introducing legislation to recover over claimed grant amounts through the tax system. If you repay any over claimed grant amounts back through the above methods then this will reduce or, if the full amount is repaid, prevent any potential tax liability under that legislation.
